My husband and I first met Anne Murray (above picture), the Canadian songbird, in 2000 after her Christmas symphony concert in her then hometown of Toronto. She is now retired and living in her native Nova Scotia near Halifax. Anne impressed me so much that I created a character in my books based on her, who is portrayed as Anne Singer in my Spires Castle Trilogy and The Black Ship Of Time books. In addition, I wrote the poems, A Magic Song and The Canadian Songbird, in her honor.

The Canadian Songbird

As a child she loved to sing

And it was truly a remarkable thing

When she would go without a push

To take voice lessons in Tatamagouche

When she grew up and finished school

She thought teaching would be cool

So for a year she taught Phys. Ed.

But later chose to sing instead

It wasn't long before we heard

Of Anne Murray singing Snowbird

And after that she grew in demand

Appearing on TV and touring the land

But though she led a hectic life

She still made time to be a wife

She had two kids, a girl and a boy

Her family was her pride and joy

And though her career's spanned 40 years

Her voice is still amazing our ears

And though her albums can be found

In antique shops, she's still around

The young may think she's a little old

But she's still a beauty to behold

And her voice is still the best I've heard

I love to listen to this Canadian songbird!

The poem, A Magic Song, appears in chapter 3 of my book, Spires Castle.

A Magic Song

In Carolina I heard a voice

From a lady who sang a song

From Nova Scotia the lady came

To sing magic to right the wrong

The lady was born to sing

I was born to write

We both had gifts bestowed on us

From Heaven's blessed Light

The lady made her living

Singing heart-felt songs

My call was giving

Words to right the wrongs

Inspiration came one day

When I heard the lady sing

It sounded like an angel's voice

New friendship it would bring

Two different people

A thousand miles apart

I hoped to meet the lady

To share my longing heart

Two different people

But somehow just the same

The lady was called to sing a song

To spark a magic flame

The poem, Thank You For Being There, appears in chapter 22 of my book, The Magic Song.

Thank You For Being There

A warm embrace or a gentle touch

Soothes your soul and means so much

Especially when you've lost your way

And can't remember yesterday

Thank you for the love you share

And in my need for being there

When I was sick you cared for me

And helped me find my destiny

And the inner strength that I forgot

To face the trouble that was my lot

Thank you for helping me to bear

And in my need for being there

When I was scared and could not cope

You comforted me and restored my hope

And when my heart beat fast with fright

You came and held me in the night

Thank you for your love so rare

And in my need for being there

Anne befriended and stood by me

Her songs I'll cherish in my memory

But when I was with you as a guest

You gave to me your very best

Thank you for a mother's care

And in my need for being there

The poem, The Black Ship Of Time, appears in chapter 33 of my book, The Black Ship Of Time.

The Black Ship Of Time

The black ship sailed before time began

In timeless dark waters before the creation of man

But one day when the Maker said, "Let there be light,"

The black ship sailed into the shadows of night

Time was then born upon the earth

To herald the day of mankind's birth

Each man lives in his own time and place

Writing the history of the human race

But the passing of time will soon be no more

For the black ship has sailed through a crack in time's door

Disaster now comes; time is elapsing

The course of mankind is quickly collapsing

A new page in history will never be written

Because the residents of time have all been smitten

But the chimes of time can again be rung

And the time traveler's song can yet be sung

To mend the rip in the fabric of time

And restore the harmony of its chime

So, to save the timeline before it fails

The black ship must return from whence it sails
